One of these, I remember, was called Treasure Valley. I don’t remember exactly where I put it, but for argument’s sake let’s say I plotted it in the white space to the east of Alexandra, between the Jukskei River and the white suburb of Linbro Park, one of my favourite terrae incognitae. My inspiration came from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, which rather predictably entranced me. The main artery through Treasure Valley was, I think, Long John Silver Drive; there would also have been Black Dog Boulevard, Captain Flint Crescent and, of course, Spyglass Hill.

We gasped yet again, this time at the everydayness of the response, as if a half century of brutal history had not blotted out the Jewish presence in-between.
