Exclusion of blacks on the basis of race automatically created a badge of inferiority. No educational opportunity could be equal if the excluded group suffered such stigma. Desegregation, no phony equalization, was the appropriate demand of the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause.

Argo kept an ice plano who ran their enterprises behind segregation's walls. There were a number of others businesses, including a funeral parlor, a cleaning shop, two barbershops, and a taxi company that ran two cabs. There were also a drugstore, several restaurants, barbecue houses, and beer parlors. At different times there were about six grocery stores. As in most communities there was an unadvertised but not unknown "red light" district, its name identifying yet another form of enterprise.

Elected general overseer of the new denomination, Mason accepted the title of bishop and proceeded to preach and organize new churches. Some of these were black, others were white. In fact, in the early years of this century the Churches of God in Christ included as many predominantly white congregations as black.
