Second language, foreign language, target language (TL) and L2 The term foreign language has usually been used to refer to the teaching or learning of a non-native language outside of the country or speech community where it is commonly spoken (Freed, 1991; Stern, 1983). Second language, in contrast to the term foreign language, is applied to non-native language learning or language use that takes place within one of the speech communities where that language is traditionally used (Freed, 1991; Gass & Selinker, 2001).
