Tim revealed during his first interview with Dr. Smith that he felt overwhelmed by his worries and just wanted them to stop. Instead, he began to spend a lot of his free time in the library at school. He would often miss lunch because of the anxiety he felt in the school cafeteria. As time went on, Robert often found excuses not to go to school. He refused to attend any school sporting events, which upset him, because he enjoyed sports. When his parents asked him if he wanted to go out to eat, Robert always hesitated before agreeing to go. He had to think of where they would eat and weigh the risks of an embarrassing situation occurring.
He continued to get mostly As and Bs, but he feared that his grades were slipping and felt he needed to study more. This isolated him even further from his friends.
