One of the coauthors of this book has experience deploying services in this manner. The ATU-C equipment was located in a facility directly across the street from a central ofﬁce that served a metropolitan area. This facility formerly was used for alarm-monitoring purposes. These types of early services were deployed by a number of up-and-coming CLECs and DSL ISP startups. Incumbent telcos were still establishing their own product offerings (and perhaps were waiting to see if earlier investments in ISDN might be able to pay for themselves before needing to be replaced).

Chapter 10, “Managing IP Addressing,” takes a look at one of the simpler tasks of a BNG—assigning an IP address.
