The fact is that there aren’t a lot of great glassblowers anymore. The young people don’t want to blow glass. They want to go to college and make more money. It used to be, if you were a glassblower, your son became a glassblower. At the turn of the century, you couldn’t be a glassblower unless your father was a glassblower. Now that’s all changed. Venice is still my favorite city, but I don’t go there anymore because of the glass. One of the most exciting installations I ever did was for the millennium celebration.

My fervent hope is that my plays have succeeded in influencing people to keep them awake – intellectually, emotionally and psycho- logically awake.
