When the aorta exits the pericardium, it curves over the right pulmonary artery and travels to the left and posterior as the aortic arch. The aortic arch gives usually rise to (a) the brachiocephalic trunk, which bifurcates into the right common carotid artery and right subclavian artery; (b) the left common carotid artery; and (c) the left subclavian artery.
